The Jing Mei “Phoenix Challenge” is an enrichment program intended to provide fun opportunities to students that encourage personal goal setting, trying new things, and confidence building.

Rules
- Phoenix Challenge submissions will be accepted between Oct 2nd, 2026 – Mar 19th, 2027.
- Teachers can help students submit their work. Choose “Teacher Submission” when submitting.
- All submissions should be labeled with the student’s name, grade, and homeroom teacher.
- Book reviews and reports should be in pen or pencil in the student’s handwriting.
- Writing and artworks must show an element of grade level effort.

Literacy 
Read 4 books and complete 4 reviews to complete the challenge. Please submit a PDF file of all 4 book reviews via Google Forms.
Very Important: Please submit all 4 book reviews in just one submission and not one at a time!
- 2 books in English (one non-fiction and one student choice)
- 2 books in Mandarin (one non-fiction and one student choice). Mandarin book reviews should be written in Mandarin.

Choose 1 of these options to complete the challenge. Please submit your electronic copy (photos/ writeup/ video) via Google Forms.
- Invention: Construct an invention (using Legos/other materials) that could solve a problem or make your community/the world better.
- Write a short description of your invention
- Include how invention works, your inspiration for making it & a picture of it
- Upcycled Craft: Create a craft from natural and/or recycled materials.
- In your submission explain your craft
- Science Literacy Option (In addition to Nonfiction Literacy Challenge)
- Pre-K - 1st Grade: Read aloud to your younger child about a scientific invention and/or scientist. Draw a picture about the topic.
- 2nd Grade: Read about a scientist/scientific advancement/invention. Draw a picture and write 5 sentences about the topic.
- 3rd - 5th Grade: Read about a scientist/scientific advancement/invention. Write a one page paper about the topic.
- STEAM Fair: If there is a school STEAM Fair prior to the last day to submit entries to the Phoenix Challenge (3/19/27), then your individual science experiment project and/or your participation in the fair as part of a school club can qualify as your Science Challenge Submission.
- Pre-K - 2nd grader: Submit a picture of your project or how you participated in the fair as part of a club
- 3rd - 5th grader: Submit a picture of your project or how you participated in the fair as part of a club and write a one page summary of your experience
