All about Readathon

Our Read Around the World journey🗽 Our Phoenix Made It to New York on Sep 30th!

As students read, our Phoenix travels from destination to destination on the world map at school. Every minute any Jing Mei student reads moves it further. Look for the Readathon display at school and watch how far Jing Mei readers can travel together!

9/28: Our Phoenix set off from Bellevue! 9/30: Our Phoenix reached its first stop - New York!

As of Sep 30th, Jing Mei students have read 8,000+ minutes together, and 139 readers have already joined our Readathon! Next stop: Paris!

Already registered? Keep reading, log your minutes, and don’t forget to send 10 donation requests to earn the Sharing Star Bonus Prize. Haven’t joined yet? There’s still plenty of time to be part of the journey!

How it works

Registration is open now. To register your reader:

  1. Go to https://bmdljing.pledgestar.com/
  2. Click “Not Registered for This Year’s Event”.
  3. Enter a parent or guardian’s name and email address, then click “Submit”.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to register your reader(s) and add family and friends.
  5. Customize your pledge page, then send pledge invitations or share the link with family and friends.

Supporters can give a fixed donation, or pledge an amount based on how much your reader reads.

Starting September 28, log your reading minutes:

  1. Log in to your PledgeStar account.
  2. Open your reader’s Reading Log.
  3. Enter the number of minutes read.

You don’t need to log right after every session. Update the Reading Log whenever it suits you, but all minutes must be entered by 11:59 PM on October 11.

Reading milestones and prizes

Sharing Star Bonus Prize! Send 10 pledge invitations to family and friends through PledgeStar and earn a special gift!

Reading Prizes are based on reading minutes, not dollars raised, and they are cumulative: reach a milestone and you earn it plus every prize before it.

Premium prizes include plush toys, water bottles, night lights and more; see the photo above. Prizes depend on stock, so if we run out, some premium prizes may be handed out after the Readathon.

We’ll also celebrate the top 3 readers in each grade, K–5, based on the total reading minutes logged during the Readathon. The Top 3 Readers in each grade will get to choose a book of their choice and will also be recognized after the Readathon.

The top-reading class in each grade gets special recognition, and teachers will celebrate with a classroom reward, such as a stuffie party. We’ll share progress and achievements in school announcements, too.

Fundraising Goal

Our schoolwide goal is $25,000. Funds raised through the Readathon support field trips, student enrichment programs, and other opportunities beyond the school’s regular budget.

But fundraising is only one part of the Readathon. Our biggest goal is to get Jing Mei students reading, discovering new stories, and building a lifelong love of books.

Don’t forget company matching! If your employer offers donation matching, select the Company Donation Match option in PledgeStar when donating and enter your company name. Then submit the matching request through your employer, your gift could have twice the impact!

Please note: The optional percentage shown at checkout is a contribution to PledgeStar to support its platform. It is not part of your donation to BMDL PTSA and is completely optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do we have to fundraise to participate? No. Students are encouraged to participate in the reading challenge regardless of how much they raise. Milestone prizes are based on reading minutes, not fundraising totals.

2. What is the optional percentage shown at checkout? The optional percentage is a contribution to PledgeStar to help support its platform. It is not part of your donation to BMDL PTSA and is completely optional. You may choose a different amount using “Custom.”

3. Can my child read in Chinese or another language? Absolutely! Reading in any language counts.

4. Do audiobooks count? Yes. Audiobooks count toward reading minutes.

5. Does reading with a parent count? Yes. For younger readers especially, being read to by a parent, caregiver, sibling, or another person counts.

6. Does PledgeStar support multiple languages? Yes. Use the language selector in the top-right corner of the PledgeStar page to switch languages. You can also send pledge invitations and donation links to family and friends in your selected language, which can be especially helpful for relatives who prefer a language other than English.

7. Does my employer’s donation matching count toward the Readathon? Yes! If your employer offers donation matching, select the Company Donation Match option in PledgeStar when donating and enter your company name. Then submit the matching request through your employer’s matching program. Your employer’s match can help your gift have even more impact for Jing Mei.
